Highlanders Start
Season With BIG WIN at the Kenzie Klassic
Remembering Fallen Swimmer Mackenzie Watts The Highlanders girls swim team is off to a great season. The girls took first place at the Kenzie Klassic
held August 29th. The Highlanders celebrated a huge victory in the meet, which is held in honor of Mackenzie Watts, a Howell
swimmer who passed away on November 21, 2005 after suffering a seizure on the deck of the Howell Pool. The Highlanders earned
333 points to capture the trophy. Notre Dame Prep was second with 203 points and Jackson was third with 189 points.
In all seven teams were represented. One of the highlights for the Highlanders was in the 200 freestyle relay, where
the team set a meet record and achieved a state qualifying time. Gabe Montesanti, Shannon Schultz, Alex Dhaenens and
Megan Sidge placed first with a time of 1 minute 45.57 seconds. "It's exciting to see Howell do well and continue to
support Mackenzie" said Meggan Watts, Mackenzie's sister. "The money raised goes to help the team and also goes
to the scholarship fund which many of the girls are eligible for." The Highlanders have 3 wins and 1 loss to rival Brigton so far this season, which
was a very close 15 point separation. However during the Brighton meet the Highlanders made 5 state cuts. "I don't think
us losing the meet is a big deal at all," said Emily Lorkowski "We really accomplished a lot tonight." The
excitement ran high for the Highlanders as they felt they could give the Bulldogs their best run since beating them in 2001. The season is just getting started and the
Highlanders are letting everyone know...Swim Hard, Swim Fast they won't let
anyone pass!
