Program Success
WHMI Story on Program Success
Howell Public Schools offers a unique program for it's middle school students. Program
Success identifies students that are underachieving and struggling with their academics and places them with teachers that
can focus them on developing good study habits, note taking and goal setting skills. Program Success was started by Highlander
Way Middle School guidance counselor Cathy Literski and 8th grade teacher David Coopersmith as a pilot program in 2005.
It was adopted by the curriculum council in May of 2007. Program Success is a win-win situation for the district as
well as it's students in that it doesn't cost the district anything, because the state pays for the at risk tutors
that the program utilizes. It provides students with the tools and confidence to do better in their academic accomplishments
which in turn spills over into other aspects of their lives. The best indicator of this programs effectiveness is a dramatic
increase in grades and a 40% drop in discipline problems. Now thats what we call "Program Success".
* If you think your Middle School Student is at academic risk and could
benefit from this program contact the Guidance office at your student's Middle School.
Here's your chance... to socialize and make some new friends with similar interests and
hobbies! The "Friends Network" is a club created to provide students an opportunity to socialize with peers in a
safe environment. The "Friends Network" is made up of teen-aged students between 6th through 12th grades.
While many of the students involved have been diagnosed with differing social and learning challenges, all students are welcome.
The "Friends Network" club is open to the Howell Public School district and all other school districts within Livingston
County. The goal is to plan at least two monthly activities in addition to the monthly meeting. The activities are fun
and encourage socialization and friendships among the students participating. The "Friends Network" meetings
are held at the Howell High School/Parker Campus, parents are encouraged to attend the meetings with their student. Parent
attendance at the social activities is not required. (unless you feel your student needs one on one supervision) Attendance
to each meeting/activity is not mandatory. There are over 30 students in the "Friends Network" fan-out. Activities
planned so far have included: a trip to the cider mill, going to the movies, Howell's annual "Boo-Fest" and
more. (The Friends Network meets the first Monday of the month at Howell High School/Parker
Campus) ** If you think your 6-12 grade student would benefit
and enjoy this wonderful social opportunity please contact:
